Common questions

Straight answers to what clients usually ask about this service.

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

The online return and any tax owed are due by 31 January after the tax year ends. The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. A paper return has an earlier deadline of 31 October. Late filing and late payment each carry their own HMRC charges, so we work backwards from the deadline.

Do I need to file a return if I already pay tax through PAYE?

Not always. You may still need one if you have self-employment income, rental income or other income that is not taxed at source, or if your income is above certain levels. Send us a summary of your income and we will tell you whether a return is required.

Can you file returns for earlier years?

Yes. We can prepare and file returns for previous tax years and explain any penalties HMRC has charged. The sooner we start, the less interest and penalty builds up.
